Boston Mayor’s LGBTQ+ Advocacy Office Faces Backlash

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s office focusing on LGBTQ+ issues is encountering criticism on social media. This follows the promotion of a “Transperiod Pride” event at a public library, which centers around themes of “menstrual equity” and the menstrual experiences of transgender individuals.

In a recent post on Instagram, the event featured a woman holding pink tampons and blue pads. The message read: “Join MASS NOW and the MA Trans Political Coalition for a discussion that raises awareness about menstrual equity and the experiences of trans menstruators.”

This free event, slated for June at the Copley Branch of the Boston Public Library, promises a catered dinner and “free sanitary underwear for all participants.” It is supported by several organizations, including the Mayor’s Office for LGBTQ Advancement, Boston Alliance for LGBTQ+ Youth (BAGLY), MASS NOW, and the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition.

The Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Advancement describes its role as developing policies and programs aimed at serving the city’s diverse LGBTQIA2S+ community. The Instagram post outlines the gathering as an opportunity to increase awareness surrounding transgender menstrual experiences.

In a previous incident, the city faced scrutiny when funds were reportedly allocated to support programs targeting LGBTQ immigrants, sparking controversy and leading one local advocacy group to return grant funds due to conflicting expectations.

Responses to Tuesday’s Instagram announcement varied widely, with many expressing shock. Comments ranged from disbelief—”This can’t be real…”—to outright surprise, with one user exclaiming, “Are you kidding me?”

Fox News Digital attempted to contact Wu and the Office of LGBTQ Affairs for statements regarding the backlash but did not receive a timely response.
