Trump Account App Launched for Parents
The U.S. Treasury has reportedly introduced an app for the “Trump Account,” which is part of President Trump’s initiative to assist American parents in educating their children about saving and managing money before they transition into adulthood.
In a news release issued Thursday, the department stated that the app “will be the primary interface for American families with the most historic policy in decades.”
The Trump Account functions like an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), allowing parents to open it as soon as their child is born. They can monitor and track investments meant for their children throughout their growth.
Under this new federal program, eligible children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, will receive a one-time initial investment of $1,000. Interestingly, older children under the age of 18 can also have an account set up on their behalf, but they won’t qualify for the government seed funding.
Families and employers can contribute additional funds, up to a cap of $5,000 per year for each child, but there’s no obligation to meet a minimum amount for added contributions. The account is managed by the parent or legal guardian until the beneficiary turns 18, at which point the control shifts entirely to the young adult.
The funds are primarily designed for tax-deferred growth akin to a traditional IRA. However, account owners can opt for penalty-free withdrawals after reaching the age of 18 for significant life events such as college tuition, purchasing their first home, or medical expenses.
“The Trump Administration is taking another step toward expanding opportunity for American families. The Trump Account app provides a simple and secure way for households to begin participating in programs designed to build long-term financial strength from day one,” stated Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. “By giving parents and young Americans easy access to their Trump accounts directly, we are helping ensure that young Americans can participate in this new era of economic participation.”
Recent reports indicate that approximately 5 million children had signed up for the Trump Account by Tax Day this year. Parents and legal guardians who officially register their children by submitting IRS Form 4547 will receive guidance via email to finalize the account setup, according to the Treasury Department.
The White House has mentioned that the app is available in all app stores.
