Al Green’s Congressional Career Concludes After Primary Loss
Al Green, a long-time opponent of Donald Trump, has officially concluded his tenure in Congress. The 78-year-old faced a significant defeat in the Democratic runoff primary against 38-year-old Rep. Christian Menefee, which was largely a result of redistricting in Texas.
In the primary held on Tuesday, Green lost decisively, securing only 30.6% of the votes compared to Menefee’s 69.4%, with nearly all votes counted, according to reports. Prior to this election, Green represented the 9th district, but recent redistricting by the Republican-led Congress required him to shift his campaign focus to the redefined 18th district.
This change in electoral landscape initiated by the redistricting has made it more challenging for Democratic candidates. Following Green’s substantial loss, President Trump expressed his satisfaction with the outcome on Truth Social.
Throughout their contentious relationship, Green and Trump have a history of public confrontation. During a recent address to Congress by Trump, Democrats, including Green, protested loudly, prompting officials to remove some members from the chamber. In another incident during the 2026 State of the Union address, Green was removed once again for holding up a protest sign, violating decorum rules.
