Vance Shares His Greatest Concern Regarding the Growth of AI: ‘Never Give In To It’

V.P. J.D. Vance’s Warning on AI in Warfare

Vice President J.D. Vance recently addressed concerns regarding artificial intelligence (AI) in warfare during a commencement speech for Air Force cadets. He emphasized the importance of not delegating moral decisions to machines.

While previous speakers faced backlash for endorsing AI, Vance acknowledged genuine worries about its implications at Thursday’s ceremony. He encouraged the next generation to prioritize human judgment alongside technological advances.

Vance expressed, “My biggest concern with AI is how it will change warfare.” He referenced a recent document, noting the complexities today’s warfighters face in a landscape increasingly influenced by AI.

“Today’s warfighters have a great moral responsibility in navigating a battlefield that is new to all of us: a battlefield equipped with AI. We must not entrust life-or-death matters to machines.”

He noted that while AI has beneficial applications both in combat and everyday life, it lacks the human conscience necessary for making ethical choices in warfare. “It’s an incredible weight to put on your shoulders,” he said, instilling confidence in the future leaders.

Vance urged cadets to be protective of their decision-making authority in combat. “As AI transforms the battlefield, both positively and negatively, I hope you remain selfish about your role as a decision-maker in war,” he advised. “Use technology to your advantage, but never succumb to it. You are the masters of war, driven by minds and hearts distinctly human.”
