Authorities confiscate 178 kg of cocaine after a Blackhawk chases down a boat in Puerto Rico.

Recent Drug Smuggling Interception Near Puerto Rico

Earlier this month, the U.S. Air and Maritime Operations (AMO) took action by deploying Black Hawk helicopters to intercept a vessel suspected of drug smuggling off Puerto Rico’s coast.

On May 14, AMO observed a 25-foot blue boat carrying three individuals and visible cargo. Following this, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported that San Juan Marines dispatched two law enforcement vessels to assist the Black Hawk after tracking the suspicious activity.

Ultimately, three nationals from the Dominican Republic were apprehended, along with five bales containing 391 pounds of cocaine. This incident highlights the ongoing American military efforts to combat drug trafficking operations in the region.

Drug Smuggling Challenges in the Caribbean

“Our air and sea operations teams showed outstanding skill and coordination during this experience,” remarked Caribbean Aviation and Maritime Director Christopher Hunter. He noted that the Black Hawk crew’s precise aerial disablement strategy played a crucial role in halting the vessel and stopping dangerous narcotics from reaching the community.

Hunter emphasized the importance of collaboration at all levels to disrupt smuggling activities and protect U.S. territories.

Earlier in his second term, President Trump had signaled a strong stance against drug smuggling, officially declaring a state of emergency due to the surge in drug-related activities on January 20, 2025. The White House described the substance smuggling as a significant threat to national security and the economy.

Military Actions Against Traffickers

In related developments, the War Department commenced attacks on ships near Venezuela, prompting reactions consistent with the country’s governmental stance. After about 20 operations targeting Caribbean waters, Army Secretary Pete Hegseth claimed these actions encouraged some top cartel drug traffickers to pause their activities indefinitely.

Interestingly, during the encounter with the Black Hawk, U.S. agents opted to approach the vessel instead of attacking from afar. Infrared footage showed the suspects hurriedly discarding their cargo into the sea as the military surrounded them.

Confrontation and Seizure

As agents got closer, the three individuals on the boat raised their hands in surrender when investigators approached. A search revealed empty plastic containers and other unidentified items. According to CBP, the contraband that was discarded was later retrieved.
