Cody Rhodes and Gunther exchange sharp comments on 'SmackDown' ahead of the event in Italy.

Wrestling Showdown: Rhodes vs. Gunther on SmackDown

The main event of “Friday Night SmackDown” saw Cody Rhodes defending his Undisputed WWE Championship against Gunther, anticipating their clash at the upcoming Clash in Italy on Sunday.

Rhodes had every reason to feel frustrated. Gunther secured his spot in the title match with some help from Paul Heyman and had been sneaking up on Rhodes for several weeks. Gunther finally addressed Rhodes, claiming those sneak attacks were now a thing of the past.

Gunther wasted no time making a statement to Rhodes. He criticized him, suggesting that Rhodes thrived in a culture that celebrated egotism and nepotism, implying that his “American Nightmare” persona was a reflection of a failing American dream.

“I know it might seem like a cliché, but the American Dream is about hard work and discipline,” Gunther remarked. “They say if you want success, you need to venture out, work hard, and sacrifice.”

He added that Rhodes’ rise seemed based on connections rather than merit, calling him a “little big brat.” Gunther felt it was his duty to protect professional wrestling from individuals like Rhodes.

In response, Rhodes accused Gunther of being a “liar.” He questioned the notion that he didn’t want the attentions that came with being champion. He pointedly stated that every aspiring wrestler dreams of that spotlight.

“You want my attention, Gunther. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be here with you,” he countered, suggesting that he was not afraid of confrontation.

Rhodes hinted that he aimed to prove just how far he could push Gunther, calling him “easy to spot, but hard to beat.” Gunther responded by pointing out his defeats of past legends, implying that Rhodes might be next on his hit list.

Sami Zayn’s Tough Lesson

Last week, Sami Zayn had left Rhodes to fend for himself against Gunther, who had put Rhodes in a sleeper hold. After losing to Gunther, Zayn confronted Rhodes backstage, expressing disappointment over how their friendship had soured.

Zayn pointedly reminded Rhodes: “I had your back when Gunther attacked you, and you repaid me by ditching our friendship.” Rhodes, however, seemed unconvinced by Zayn’s explanations.

“It’s all about lessons, right?” Zayn replied, stating that sometimes tough love is necessary. He felt conflicted about not helping Rhodes, but believed it would teach him something valuable.

Cargill and Ripley Heat Up

Back in the ring, Jade Cargill, along with Michin and B-Fab, engaged with the fiery crowd, claiming she was “one of a kind” and didn’t require validation. Michin declared, “The future is now,” just before Rhea Ripley made her entrance.

Ripley and Cargill are set to compete for the WWE Women’s Championship at Clash in Italy, adding more heat to an already heated rivalry.

Ripley challenged Cargill, reminding her of their past encounter where Ripley came out on top. Cargill quickly fired back, accusing Ripley of relying on others to elevate her status.

Things escalated when Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss joined Ripley, taking the back-and-forth to another level. After some heated exchanges, General Manager Nick Aldis intervened and arranged a match between Cargill and Bliss. The altercation turned chaotic with brawling on the sides.

Ultimately, Cargill emerged victorious, but not without delivering some post-match punishment until Ripley and Flair stepped in to intervene.

Closer to a Showdown

Meanwhile, Trick Williams continues to rise in the ranks since joining SmackDown, recently winning the United States Championship. He set his sights on the King of the Ring tournament, asserting his place in professional wrestling.

Carmelo Hayes, who has history with Williams, interrupted him to assert that he planned to deal with his own challenges first. The tension between them was palpable, escalating into a confrontation.

As the evening unfolded, Williams delivered a slap to his rivals, igniting further conflict, as they clashed over who would get the next shot at the title.

Match Results:

  • Jade Cargill def. Alexa Bliss.
  • Tara Tonga and Tama Tonga def. Damian Priest and Royce Keyes.
  • Sami Zayn def. Matt Cardona.
  • Carmelo Hayes and Ricky Saints ended in a double countout draw.
  • Chelsea Green def. Nia Jax.
