Maine Senate hopeful Graham Platner sent inappropriate messages to women while he was married.

Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate attempting to unseat Republican Senator Susan Collins in Maine, has allegedly sent sexual text messages to multiple women since marrying his wife two years ago. His campaign acknowledged these communications to Politico after a Wall Street Journal article reported that his wife, Amy Gartner, informed a campaign aide about them while Platner was probing potential political risks during his Senate campaign.

Gartner discovered the messages months after their marriage in 2024, according to the Journal. She reportedly revealed this information just before Platner attended a campaign rally in support of Senator Bernie Sanders, but aides decided it was a private issue for the couple.

“I confided very personal details about my marriage to someone I thought was a friend,” Gartner stated. “In the months since then, I’ve watched her spread malicious gossip to anyone willing to listen. I trusted her with the most private aspects of our lives, and it deeply hurt to experience such betrayal.”

She emphasized that they’ve worked hard on their marriage, attending counseling and maintaining honesty with each other. “Despite everything, our bond has only grown stronger,” she added, expressing confidence in Platner’s character.

Platner, an oyster farmer and veteran, has faced previous controversies, including a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol that has been removed, and insensitive comments made on Reddit regarding sexual assault and wounded soldiers. Regardless of these issues, a recent University of New Hampshire poll suggested he leads Collins among likely voters, 51% to 42%.

Following Governor Janet Mills’ withdrawal from the race in April, Platner stepped up as the Democratic contender. California Democratic Representative Ro Khanna expressed his support for him, highlighting Platner’s commitment against war and his vision for a better future.

On the other hand, Collins has criticized Platner, claiming his views are too extreme for Maine voters. Platner himself highlighted the core issues at stake, pointing to a history of policies that favor corporations over workers.
