Costco recalls frozen food product due to salmonella concerns

Recall of Frozen Cheese Bread Products at Costco

Costco is recalling frozen cheese bread products due to potential salmonella contamination, and they have been advised to inform customers who bought these items.

The recall, initiated by Champion Foods LLC, involves select batches of Motor City Pizza Company’s 5-Cheese Bread. This decision came after an ingredient supplier recalled milk powder over salmonella concerns.

Champion Foods explained that the affected milk powder was provided to a third-party manufacturer responsible for the seasoning blend used in the bread’s cheese sauce.

Costco, in turn, reached out to members who purchased the product, noting that their records indicate these customers bought the 5-Cheese Bread between February 6 and May 29. They’ve suggested that anyone who has the recalled items should not eat them and instead return them to their local Costco for a full refund.

This recall impacts both single-pack and two-pack versions of the frozen bread.

The single-pack products carry a UPC code of 8 70375 00511 1 and have sell-by dates between February 4, 2027, and April 21, 2027.

For the two-pack, the UPC code is 8 70375 00509 8, with sell-by dates ranging from February 3, 2027, to March 25, 2027.

Despite routine tests conducted by the seasoning blend manufacturer showing the batch was negative for salmonella before production, Champion Foods opted for the recall “out of an abundance of caution” to ensure customer safety.

According to Costco’s notice, there haven’t been any reported illnesses or injuries linked to the recalled products.

Salmonella is a microorganism that can lead to serious, sometimes fatal infections in vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. In healthy individuals, symptoms might include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

In rare instances, salmonella can enter the bloodstream, potentially causing arterial infections, endocarditis, or arthritis.
