Trump’s Face on $250 Bill? Treasury Secretary Advocates for it
In Washington, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has shown support for the idea of putting President Trump’s image on a proposed $250 bill, claiming that his achievements warrant such recognition. Bessent suggested that the Treasury should design these $250 bills in advance, so they’re ready if Congress votes in favor of the measure.
“It’s fitting, considering that President Trump is serving during the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding,” Bessent noted during an appearance on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.” He added, “Back at the 150th anniversary, Calvin Coolidge had a coin minted in his honor.” Bessent’s sentiments could be seen as a way to celebrate what he views as significant contributions.
Recently, concerns arose after a report indicated that some officials were encouraging the Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing to produce currency featuring Trump’s likeness, but such a move would contradict the Thayer Amendment of 1866, which restricts certain images on U.S. currency.
Further complicating matters, there are regulations outlining approved currency denominations, which notably exclude the $250 bill, although higher denominations like $100 and $500 are accepted.
Congressman Andy Barr from Kentucky defended this proposed legislation, confirming updates on the design and preparing for its potential release, stating, “We’ve been sketching out the details well in advance.” However, he acknowledged that if the bill doesn’t pass, there would be no issuance of those bills.
In a recent press briefing, Bessent—filling in for the press secretary on maternity leave—asserted that the Treasury’s actions were fully above board and not to be seen negatively.
On the flip side, some Democrats have introduced legislation aimed at preventing Trump from having his image on currency. Congressman Jimmy Gomez from California expressed intentions to block any move to include Trump’s signature on dollar bills, showing the growing divide on this issue.
