Trump Critiques Pope Leo XIV After Meeting with Chicago Mayor

Former President Donald Trump recently criticized Pope Leo XIV for meeting with Mayor Brandon Johnson of Chicago. He dismissed the mayor’s influence, labeling him as “useless” and emphasized that concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions should take precedence.

In a post, Trump stated, “Someone should explain to the Pope that the Mayor of Chicago is useless and that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons!” His remarks followed a publicized image of Johnson meeting with the Pope in the Vatican.

In response, Johnson expressed his excitement about meeting the Pope, referring to him as “a great human being.” He also pointed out that Chicago residents are weary of Trump’s policies, especially regarding his stance on Iran, stating that these approaches complicate life for working families.

During his visit, Johnson showcased various Chicago-themed items, including a Cubs cap, as he led a delegation to the Vatican. Johnson has expressed intentions to urge the Pope to advocate for reparations aimed at descendants of African American slaves.

Trump’s criticism also ties into a broader context of ongoing tensions between his administration and the Vatican, particularly regarding policies on immigration and foreign affairs. He lamented what he sees as the Pope’s failure to address issues like drugs entering the U.S. from Venezuela, suggesting that the Pope should focus on religious duties rather than political matters.

The Pope responded to Trump’s criticisms by asserting his commitment to peace and dialogue among nations. He stressed that his messages advocate for understanding and shouldn’t be misconstrued as political attacks, insisting that his mission is guided by the principles of the Gospel.
