Family of young Spurs fan declared 'brain-dead' after tragic celebration accident shares he's 'fighting for his life'

Family of Spurs Fan Remains Hopeful After Tragic Incident

The relatives of a young San Antonio Spurs supporter, declared brain dead after a fall from a truck during a postgame celebration, continue to hold onto hope. The family insists that the boy is still “fighting for his life.”

Jose Luis Rodriguez III, affectionately known as Joey, sustained a critical head injury when the Spurs triumphed over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the conference finals, compelling a Game 7. He has been hospitalized since the incident occurred on Thursday.

Rodriguez’s grandmother expressed her faith in miracles, saying, “I believe in God and I believe in miracles. I’m doing my best for my son, my daughter-in-law, and the rest of my family.” She has called upon the community to pray for Joey.

Unfortunately, Joey was pronounced brain dead after his fall during the euphoric celebration following the Spurs’ tie with the Thunder in the Western Conference finals.

At the time of the accident, Rodriguez was positioned in the passenger window of the vehicle when it drove over a curb, ultimately leading to his catastrophic fall.

“He left blood on the street,” recounted his aunt, Yvonne Hudson. She mentioned that initially, Joey’s parents were hesitant to let him partake in the celebratory chaos, concerned about the “nonsense” occurring around them.

However, when Joey assured them that a friend’s parents would accompany him, they relented. Ultimately, though, it was just him and his friend who went out.

After the fall, friends rushed Rodriguez to a nearby clinic, where he lost a pulse for eight minutes before being transferred to a trauma center due to the seriousness of his injuries.

His family holds fast to hope, asserting that he is still “fighting for his life.” Despite the severe head injuries, they say his organs continue to function.

Hudson shared a moment of cautious optimism when she noted that when the family touched Joey’s leg, his knee twitched—though doctors clarified it was merely a spinal reflex, not an indicator of brain activity.

In light of recent events, San Antonio police are cautioning fans to celebrate responsibly during the playoffs, where boisterous street gatherings have become common.

This tradition has roots dating back to the Spurs’ 1999 NBA title win, with thousands of fans often filling the streets, hanging out of cars, and riding bikes or horses.

The San Antonio Police Department has urged celebrators to observe traffic laws, remain in their vehicles when possible, and heed the direction of authorities on-site to ensure everyone’s safety.

Recently, the Spurs surprised the Thunder to clinch the Western Conference title, setting the stage for an NBA Finals matchup against the Knicks. Ahead of the finals, star player Dylan Harper took a moment during a press conference to remind fans to stay safe. “We love you all. Stay safe in San Antonio,” he said. “I know you’re all excited, but please stay safe outside.”
