Texas Tech softball player's father makes heated remarks in College World Series handshake incident in Tennessee

Softball Feud Moves from Field to Social Media

A heated dispute in college softball recently escalated from the playing field to Twitter.

The father of Texas Tech player Taylor Pannell reportedly criticized Tennessee coach Karen Weekley and a sports reporter after a contentious postgame handshake following the Lady Volunteers’ win over the Red Raiders in the College World Series.

Pannell, who made the switch from Tennessee to Texas Tech last season, alleged that during the handshake line, Weekley told him it was a mistake to transfer. This was after Texas Tech’s narrow victory of 2-1.

A tweet that has since been taken down included a clip of Weekley’s remarks, with Pannell’s father expressing that his daughter did indeed make a mistake in leaving Tennessee.

He was also quoted discussing money in his deleted tweets, suggesting that he was “living rent-free” in a less passionate fanbase and relishing the notoriety his posts garnered.

In a direct message to a reporter from Sports Illustrated, he expressed his discontent over the coverage, later retracting it as well.

In the DM, he reportedly said, “Your dad would be upset seeing the clickbait articles you write. You lost your jobs at Fastpitch News and Softball America. Why is that?” Additionally, he acknowledged his love for attention but preferred it from “losers behind fake accounts,” urging the reporter to put in genuine effort.

The conflict between the Pannells and Tennessee has roots in Taylor’s departure after three seasons with the SEC program. When she announced her commitment to Texas Tech in June 2025, she hinted at some shady tactics that may have influenced her decision.

The outfielder entered the transfer portal shortly after her time with Tennessee concluded and took a visit to Texas Tech without officially being in the portal.

Many believe it’s necessary for athletes to earn money in sports—it’s been a long time coming. Yet, the issue lies in the direct or indirect contact with players before their seasons end and the signing of NIL deals before they officially enter the transfer portal.

After the game against Tennessee, both teams engaged in the customary handshake line. However, Pannell alleged that Weekley’s comments crossed a line. Taylor reflected, “We were just saying, ‘Good game,’ and instead, she said I made a mistake, which is a bit absurd.” She thought it odd that Weekley was still fixated on the issue, labeling it as old news.

Weekley did not address Pannell’s claims directly but provided another perspective, stating, “It was just a good game, just like I say to any player.”

ESPN’s footage showed the handshake line, where Pannell appeared to maintain a neutral demeanor while walking past Weekley.

However, shortly afterward, Taylor reportedly turned and confronted someone, as noted by ESPN.

This fallout incited considerable backlash, with accusations flying toward Taylor of what some called “blatant lies.” They contended that upon reviewing the handshake line video, it was clear that Weekley hadn’t singled her out and had simply offered a general comment about the match.

As both teams advance, Texas Tech and Tennessee could face off again in the College World Series finals on June 3, with critical semifinal games lined up for Monday.

Tennessee is up against Texas, needing just one win to move ahead, while Texas Tech must defeat Alabama twice to remain in contention for the national championship.
