New York City Mayor Acknowledges Pride Month
New York City’s Mayor Zoran Mamdani hailed the beginning of Pride Month on Monday with a post on X, emphasizing that honoring the contributions of queer and transgender individuals in the city requires more than just a month of recognition.
“It will take more than a month to honor the contributions of queer and transgender New Yorkers,” Mamdani stated.
He pointed to historical milestones, from Cercle Hermaphroditus, the first trans advocacy group in the U.S. in 1895, to the significant drag balls of the Harlem Renaissance, and the Stonewall Uprising. He also mentioned ACT UP!, founded in 1987 during a time when the Reagan administration largely neglected the struggles of queer people. According to him, the legacy of New York City has long been influenced by its queer and trans residents.
Mamdani further expressed support for the LGBTQ+ community, stating, “To all my queer and trans neighbors: You deserve a city where you can live safely, openly, and joyfully. Proudly New York City.”
The Democratic National Committee also commemorated Pride Month in a post, inviting everyone to “Love openly. Live authentically. Happy Pride!”
Other Democratic leaders showed their support as well. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) shared a post that read, “During #PrideMonth, we celebrate love, freedom, and the courage to live authentically. From San Francisco to communities across the country, we extend our promise of equality and honor the pioneers and activists who pledged to continue the work they started. Happy #Pride!”
Former Vice President Kamala Harris also voiced her thoughts, sharing, “Pride is joy. Pride is courage. Pride is celebration. And Pride is the ongoing fight to empower all people to live their authentic selves. This month and every month, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and all those who continue to fight for equality. Happy Pride!”
