Protests at Delaney Hall: A Failed Moment for Hasan Piker
Hasan Piker, a far-left livestreamer, attempted to seize the moment during chaotic anti-ICE protests at the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. However, his efforts didn’t quite pan out.
Piker arrived at the protest flanked by fellow left activists and local congressional candidate Adam Hamawy, who had previously been associated with a meeting hosted by the Central New Jersey Democratic Socialists of America.
While at the protest, a man shouted at Piker, accusing him of being a “dog abuser.” This was likely referring to a viral video from 2025 that suggested Piker used an electric collar on his dog, Kaya.

It’s somewhat amusing when you consider the irony. Here’s someone who advocates for extreme left ideals and even encourages violence for political gains, yet he finds himself criticized for alleged mistreatment of animals.
The anti-ICE protest itself reportedly escalated to the point where projectiles were thrown at officers, barriers used as weapons, tires set ablaze, and confrontations occurred between protesters and law enforcement. Tear gas, pepper spray, and numerous arrests became necessary to restore order.
While it’s uncertain if the heckler had any connection to the anti-ICE movement, he took the opportunity to challenge a prominent figure on the left for not living up to certain standards.
Animal rights are high on their list of priorities. Even though Piker shares their anti-ICE stance and critiques of law enforcement, his perceived failure regarding animal welfare led to him being publicly condemned.
It seems Piker might miss the point that the left’s expectations aren’t just about policies; they also encompass a sort of moral accountability. Following his retreat from the protest, he criticized Democratic New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill for deploying state police, suggesting she was facilitating a Trump-era agenda.
These so-called purity tests aren’t entirely new. Historical examples, such as Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution, show how radicalized factions have historically persecuted even their own supporters if they fell short of ideological standards.
What Piker encountered is perhaps just the start. If these kinds of confrontations persist, no one, regardless of their political affiliations, may feel secure.
