Tragic Stabbing Incident on MARTA Train

A 66-year-old woman lost her life after being stabbed nearly 20 times on a MARTA train in Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday.

According to reports, an arrest warrant has been issued for John Elijah Matthews, a 25-year-old man now facing murder charges for the attack on Margaret Swan. The incident took place as the train approached Auckland City station around 11:30 a.m.

Interestingly, the two had not interacted prior to this horrifying event, and Swan was reportedly seated alone. Matthews allegedly approached her, took out a knife, and attacked, severely injuring her.

Witnesses recounted that Swan screamed and attempted to escape her seat as Matthews picked her up and continued to stab her. Surveillance footage captured the moments, showing him throwing her to the ground and remaining nearby until the train came to a stop.

After the attack, Matthews exited the train holding the knife, just as the police arrived at the scene. Authorities don’t have any information on his address or phone number.

Several bystanders witnessed the whole ordeal, and police apprehended Matthews shortly thereafter. Emergency responders arrived but, unfortunately, could not save Swan’s life.

Footage circulating on social media shows a man in an orange shirt lying outside the train, with one individual appearing to shout at police officers nearby.

There’s still uncertainty surrounding whether the suspect knew the victim. MARTA issued a statement, calling the act “senseless” and expressing condolences to Swan’s family and those who witnessed the tragedy.

Another video clip highlighted the bloodstains on the train floor, a stark reminder of the violence that had occurred.

MARTA officials acknowledged that such incidents can cause fear among both passengers and employees and reassured the public that they are committed to maintaining safety and security within the transportation system.

Interestingly, Atlanta News First reported that although a cleaning of the station was planned ahead of the World Cup, residents are now calling for increased security measures.
