Adams shares advice on campaigning in NYC with GOP governor candidate Blakeman

Former Mayor Eric Adams has been offering guidance to Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman as he campaigns in New York City, and he hasn’t dismissed the idea of a bipartisan endorsement.

During a breakfast meeting at the Loews Regency Hotel in Manhattan, the two discussed Blakeman’s perspectives on state issues, particularly how families in suburban areas feel pressured by policies from the state Democrats.

After their conversation, Blakeman mentioned, “We talked about the challenges faced by middle-class families in places like the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, especially homeowners feeling the squeeze.”

“The middle class is being hurt by China’s policies,” remarked another participant. Adams, a Democrat who last year ran for re-election on an independent line, provided Blakeman with valuable insights about the communities he should engage with.

Blakeman expressed admiration for Adams, calling him a “good friend” and “a wealth of knowledge.” In turn, Adams recalled that Blakeman had previously given him advice on matters like security and immigration when he was in charge at City Hall.

Interestingly, Adams hasn’t ruled out backing Hochul’s Republican challenger, either. When asked about supporting Blakeman, he replied that it was something he might consider but didn’t commit to.

“I see this as just the start of a conversation,” Adams mentioned while heading to a rally organized by attorney Howard Fensterman.

He added, “I had breakfast with a friend and listened to his vision, discussing how I perceive what’s unfolding in our city and state. That’s what today is about.”

Adams took a moment to criticize his successor, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, suggesting a lukewarm relationship with Governor Hochul and refrained from voicing support for her.

“I believe in this city and state,” he stated. “Having served as a state senator and congressman, along with my time as a police officer, I think working-class families need assurance that our city remains affordable and secure. That’s the message I want to share today.”

After their meeting, Adams remained noncommittal about his own preferences for the gubernatorial race, saying it’s ultimately up to the voters. Blakeman, for his part, expressed excitement about the possibility of having Adams’ backing.

This interaction unfolds as Blakeman continues to critique Hochul regarding the state’s housing shortages and the soaring cost of living, including high utility costs.
