Caitlin Clark’s Response to Coach’s Criticism

Caitlin Clark, the WNBA star, recently addressed the ongoing conversation surrounding a moment between her and Fever coach Stephanie White during a game. This interaction, which occurred over the weekend, has sparked significant discussion among fans and analysts.

“There are many in the media who think they understand the situation, but they’re quite wrong about it,” Clark stated plainly. She expressed her frustration, particularly on Monday, about the misconceptions surrounding their relationship.

During Saturday’s game, where the Fever lost to the Portland Fire 100-84, the incident drew attention. Speculation about their dynamic led to Clark voicing her support for White when speaking to the press. “It’s competitive out there. We both want to win,” she remarked. “These situations happen often, and yes, there are cameras. But I stand with Steph; she’s always had my back.” Clark emphasized that the locker room and coaching staff didn’t feel there was any issue, suggesting that outsiders were exaggerating what was just a moment in time.

White also conveyed similar feelings in her post-game comments, stating, “The moment just disappeared.” She further added, “We can’t control the stories that circulate.” Emphasizing the relentless nature of public opinion, she acknowledged that people will always have their thoughts about both her and Clark. However, she insisted, “That’s not indicative of our real relationships.”

The moment was bound to generate buzz from the outset.

Social media captured the verbal exchange between the two, occurring right before Clark was benched. In a moment captured on video, Clark was seen visibly frustrated behind White.

Clark later shared that she and White share a strong understanding. She noted how White supported her during a previous injury, highlighting their solid bond amidst the challenges. “Steph has always had my back—I really appreciate that,” she added, reflecting on the time when she struggled with a groin injury last season.

White reiterated the challenge of external perceptions, stating, “People will always share their thoughts on Caitlin. It’s part of the job. But we focus on maintaining our relationship, making sure we’re both alright and staying grounded.”

The Fever had a mixed start to the 2026 season, currently standing at a 4-4 record, with Clark maintaining a shooting average of 39.3 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc.
