Wisconsin Democrat highlights organization advocating relaxed CDL regulations for unauthorized immigrants

Illegal Immigrant Truck Driver Charged After Fatal California Crash

A tragic incident in Lodi, California, has led to charges against illegal immigrant Manveer Singh for vehicular manslaughter following a semi-truck crash that resulted in a death. The Department of Homeland Security revealed that Singh had been arrested and released at the Arizona border earlier this year.

There’s ongoing discussion among federal officials, including Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, about introducing Delilah’s Law. This proposed legislation aims to prohibit commercial driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants.

In a different context, Democratic candidates are actively campaigning for a highly competitive U.S. House district, emphasizing their connections to groups advocating for relaxed CDL regulations for undocumented workers. Rebecca Cook, who is challenging Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden in Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District, has highlighted support from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).

Cook expressed her pride in partnering with the dedicated members of AFSCME. This alliance is evidently pressing back against some Democratic initiatives aimed at tightening citizenship verification for specific sectors.

Interestingly, the Department of Homeland Security has pointed out several instances where Americans have lost their lives due to accidents involving undocumented drivers with CDLs. One case mentioned involves a driver from Pakistan who was indicted for a fatal crash after driving the wrong way on a highway.

USCIS spokesman Matthew J. Tragesser commented, criticizing the situation, saying that illegal immigrants shouldn’t be behind the wheel of such massive vehicles on American roads. He also emphasized that such tragedies are preventable, reflecting the importance of stricter measures to enhance community safety.

As lawmakers at both state and federal levels revisit CDL regulations, AFSCME continues to advocate for open standards, arguing that such an approach would maximize employment opportunities, even for undocumented individuals. The organization has gone as far as providing resources for companies to navigate around CDL restrictions for illegal immigrants and has also legally challenged federal mandates requiring proof of legal status for CDL issuance.

This is particularly relevant for Wisconsin, which has a significant number of individuals working in the trucking sector. Cook’s connection to AFSCME in this context stands out, as the trucking industry comprises a considerable portion of employment in the state.

If you look into the recent statistics, about one in 14 jobs in Wisconsin is connected to the trucking industry, underlining its importance in the local economy. Cook previously ran against Van Orden in 2024 but lost narrowly.
