Jill Biden Reflects on Joe’s Pre-Debate Struggles

In a new memoir, Jill Biden shares insights into her husband’s state of mind before his notable debate with Donald Trump. She recounts that Joe, the former president, confided he felt “sick” leading up to the encounter, which took place on June 27, 2024, in Atlanta.

According to Jill’s book, “A View from the East Wing,” she observed that Joe appeared “overly tired” as the debate approached. It was evident to her that something was off. The 46th president, who is the oldest person to hold the office, expressed his discomfort but couldn’t identify the cause, saying simply, “I don’t know, I just don’t feel well.”

Even a pre-debate moment of intimacy didn’t seem to help much; Jill described Joe’s appearance as “looking like clay” and “oddly monochromatic.”

As the debate unfolded, Jill instantly noticed his lackluster demeanor, commenting, “He didn’t look like the person from the beginning.” During the event, viewers were taken aback as Biden struggled with his words and even made incorrect statements such as, “We finally defeated Medicare.”

Behind closed doors, Jill grappled with concerns over her husband’s health, questioning whether he was experiencing a stroke or adverse effects from medication. Meanwhile, the White House attempted to downplay the situation, attributing Joe’s condition to a lingering cold from a European trip and suggesting he had overexerted himself.

After their stage encounter, Joe asked Jill if she was fed up, to which she replied affirmatively. Following the debate, she stopped by a local Waffle House, trying to lift the spirits of stunned supporters.

“Joe, you really did a great job,” she reiterated that night. “You answered all the questions and knew all the facts.” Yet, she felt the need to champion her husband, reasoning, “I had to support him. I’m his wife.” In a recent interview, she explained that she couldn’t go up there and criticize him in front of their supporters.

In the wake of the dismal debate performance, many in the Democratic party urged Joe Biden to exit the presidential race, a suggestion he ultimately took to heart on July 21, 2024. Jill recalls that the next day, Joe told her, “Jillie, I didn’t have a choice.”
