Russia Strikes Ukraine with Missiles and Drones, Resulting in 13 Fatalities

Russia Launches Large-Scale Attack on Ukraine

In a significant escalation, Russia struck Ukraine early Tuesday with a barrage of drones and missiles, resulting in at least 13 fatalities and many more injuries. This attack has reignited demands for increased military assistance from the United States to Ukraine.

This latest assault marks one of the largest coordinated offensives by Moscow in recent months.

Reports indicate that numerous individuals, including several children, were hurt in a nighttime aerial strike that targeted an apartment building in Kiev. Emergency services are currently engaged in desperate efforts to locate anyone who may be trapped under the debris.

The death toll and number of injuries are expected to rise throughout the day.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reported that Russia unleashed a staggering 656 drones along with 73 various types of missiles during the overnight attack, leading him to urgently appeal for more U.S. support.

“We are in immediate need of assistance from the United States, particularly in terms of missile supplies for the Patriot system,” Zelenskiy remarked, referring to the air defense system that is crucial for intercepting Russian projectiles yet remains in limited supply.

A BBC account describes the chaos following the Russian strikes. A substantial plume of smoke was observed rising from central Kiev as officials cautioned residents to remain in evacuation centers.

The sounds of airstrikes continued into the early hours, accompanied by the whir of drones and numerous loud blasts. Mayor Vitali Klitschko mentioned that the attacks ignited fires near a gas station, construction site, several apartment buildings, and two private residences. Power outages were also widespread across the city.

Russia claimed that the attack was aimed specifically at Ukraine’s military-industrial complex, denying any intention to hit civilian targets as it pursues its military objectives in the region.

Since commencing its invasion in February 2022, Moscow has consistently shelled Ukraine, making this conflict one of the deadliest in Europe since World War II, leading to a staggering loss of life and displacement of millions.
