Shifts in MLB’s Approach to Pride Events

While pride events continue to be an accepted part of Major League Baseball, the manner in which teams engage with them is gradually evolving.

This June, many professional baseball teams will allocate a portion of their marketing funds to promote awareness of LGBTQ+ issues, with 97% planning to take part in related activities.

Interestingly, 46% of MLB fans report that Pride Night makes them “less likely” to attend a game. This sentiment reflects a growing divide among sports enthusiasts regarding these promotional activities. Recent research indicates a nearly equal split between those in favor and those opposed; for instance, a survey noted that 48-55% view Pride promotions as negative or neutral.

A study conducted by Civic Science revealed that nearly half of MLB fans—46%—are deterred from attending games due to Pride Nights. Further data from Morning Consult shows that about 47% of U.S. adults support leagues hosting Pride events.

In this context, the Texas Rangers stand out as the only MLB team planning to host a Pride Night for the first time. While they sell pride-themed merchandise online, no past events have been organized.

Questions arose when Blaze News reached out to other teams about potential shifts in their Pride Night approaches for 2026, especially considering the increasing polarization among fans.

Many teams are following a new trend where they offer Pride Night without traditional large celebrations or giveaways. Instead, fans can opt for special event packages that include tickets and themed memorabilia.

The St. Louis Cardinals aim to create a welcoming environment, ensuring that fans feel comfortable sharing their love for the team and the game. According to a spokesperson, they are also providing Pride-themed caps to those who purchase special tickets.

Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Reds are collaborating with Cincinnati Pride to honor a recipient with the Pride Community Advocate Award. Special ticket packages sold by the Reds come with items featuring a transgender flag.

The Detroit Tigers, while originally reaching out for clarification on Pride-related questions, didn’t answer specific inquiries. They also have Pride packages available alongside various promotions, such as Juneteenth jerseys.

Turning to the New York Yankees, they emphasized their commitment to partnering with organizations that celebrate Pride. They are involved with initiatives like the Yankees-Stonewall Scholarship, which commemorates the 1969 police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Additionally, they will offer special edition Yankees Pride caps with select ticket purchases.
