Jill Biden’s Memoir Reveals Tensions with Kamala Harris
Former First Lady Jill Biden has shared some startling insights in her new memoir, particularly regarding her feelings toward Vice President Kamala Harris. These thoughts emerged after her husband, Joe Biden, announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential election.
In the memoir, titled View from the East Wing, Jill recounts a moment when Harris shifted into what she described as “prosecutor mode.” Rather than showing empathy over Joe’s resignation, Harris promptly sought immediate backing from her campaign to bolster her future political aspirations.
The two had a conversation over speakerphone during a summer weekend at the Bidens’ beach house in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Jill proposed waiting until the following morning to release a formal statement supporting Harris. However, Harris insisted, “I wish they would do it sooner,” viewing any delay as an opportunity for “pranks.”
Even as Joe Biden mentioned he would return her call once he had clarity, Harris pressed for urgency, asking, “Can you do it right away? Like, within 20 minutes?”
Jill became increasingly frustrated with what she considered unreasonable demands and ultimately left the room during the call. Just under half an hour later, a formal statement of support was issued, effectively squashing any prospect of a “mini-primary” before the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
The memoir also expresses Jill’s dissatisfaction with Harris being chosen as the running mate in 2020, particularly due to the sharp critiques Harris directed at Joe during the primary debates. “There are millions of people in the United States, so why should we choose the person who attacked Joe?” she questioned.
Interestingly, the book indicates that Harris was introduced as a candidate by Ron Klain, who later took on the role of White House Chief of Staff. Klain believed that selecting Harris provided the best strategic advantage for winning the presidential election.
“Yes, Ms. Harris attacked Mr. Biden more harshly than any other major candidate in the Democratic primary. Yes, the Biden family viewed it as a smear and a betrayal. In Mr. Klain’s assessment, it would work in Mr. Biden’s favor,” the memoir reveals. Klain told Biden that choosing Harris would illustrate his generosity and highlight his capability as a unifying leader.
