White House Correspondents’ Dinner Rescheduled
President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the White House Correspondents’ Dinner (WHCD), initially postponed, will take place at the Waldorf Astoria in July. This new date follows the unsettling events of this year’s dinner, which was abruptly cut short due to gunfire.
“It’s been confirmed that the WHCD, which ended so abruptly on April 25th, will be held again on July 24th. It’s really important for us not to let a madman dictate our lives or schedules,” Trump remarked on Truth Social.
He added a note about the venue, “That’s quite the exclusive ticket! The Waldorf Astoria is where I built the ballroom.” Historically, this event has taken place at the Washington Hilton, but this year’s gathering was disrupted by an armed individual. The scene turned chaotic as Secret Service rushed the president and first lady from the venue while guests sought safety.
Jiang Weijia, president of the White House Correspondents Association, shared in an email to members that the board decided to reschedule the dinner for a more “intimate meeting.” Jiang also stated that enhanced safety protocols will be in place for the event.
Presidential spokeswoman Caroline Levitt, currently on maternity leave, expressed excitement about the dinner on X, stating she looks forward to a “great night.”
On a related note, May saw Cole Allen plead not guilty to multiple charges, including attempting to assassinate the president and discharging a weapon during a violent crime.
This rescheduled dinner is poised not just to carry out existing plans but also to symbolize a stand against violence and affirm the press’s unhindered freedom. Jiang stated, “Courage and community should prevail in times like these.”
