Border Patrol Chief Resigns, Credits Secure Border Under Trump
Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks has stepped down from his position, marking the end of a 37-year career. In his resignation, he asserted that during the Trump administration, he oversaw what he described as “the most secure border” in U.S. history. His tenure included implementing measures like the deployment of razor wire and state troopers in Texas. This unexpected resignation leaves U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facing operational challenges due to a lack of funds, sparking concerns about the future of border security initiatives.
After Banks’ departure, the Trump administration appointed a seasoned Border Patrol veteran, Rosario “Pete” Vazquez, as the new Chief. Vazquez, who has more than 26 years of experience in various roles, is set to manage a team of roughly 20,000 agents and professionals across the country. Before this appointment, he led operations along the U.S.-Canada border and coordinated efforts with multiple agencies at different levels.
CBP Director Rodney S. Scott expressed strong support for Vasquez, acknowledging his extensive frontline experience and ability to navigate challenging situations. “He has earned the respect of our employees and delivers results, understanding the demands of this mission,” Scott stated. Vazquez replaces Mike Banks, who confirmed his retirement last month after a significant period leading the agency during President Trump’s second term.
In an earlier discussion with Fox News, Banks reflected on his legacy, emphasizing his role in transforming border security from a troubled state to a more secure situation. He noted, “We’ve put the ship back on track from one of the most unsafe borders to one of the safest.” Now, Vazquez takes on significant responsibilities overseeing about 7,000 miles of land borders and coastal waters.
Throughout his career, Vazquez has held various leadership positions in the Border Patrol, including work in specialized units such as Search, Trauma, and Rescue, as well as the Counterterrorism Bureau. His recent appointment coincides with ongoing Border Patrol efforts to combat transnational crime, human smuggling, and drug trafficking.
Vazquez expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him while emphasizing a commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of the Border Patrol as an agency. He stated, “My focus is clear: supporting our people and ensuring the U.S. Border Patrol remains the most effective border force in the world.” Founded in 1924, the U.S. Border Patrol is a crucial federal agency tasked with securing America’s land borders.
