2026 Ebola outbreak in Africa: Visuals illustrate the effects

As of June 2, 2026, a significant Ebola outbreak in Central Africa has now surpassed 1,000 suspected infections, primarily concentrated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to officials from the World Health Organization. The sudden rise in reported cases raises questions about potential concerns for Americans.

For most people in the U.S., the likelihood of a widespread Ebola outbreak remains very low, as highlighted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Widespread transmission of Ebola is quite unlikely,” noted Michele Barry, senior associate dean for global health at Stanford University, in a recent statement. “What matters now is a swift global response to help support the DRC and neighboring countries in managing this problem and protecting lives.”

Back in 2014, the U.S. faced imported Ebola cases from an outbreak in West Africa, resulting in treatment for 11 individuals, two of whom ultimately succumbed to the virus. Most had contracted Ebola while abroad.

Current Situation in the 2026 Ebola Outbreak

The initial case of the new Bundibugyo strain of Ebola was reported in late April in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with investigations beginning early in May, as confirmed by the WHO. Unfortunately, unlike previous strains, this one lacks both an approved vaccine and targeted treatment.

Since the outbreak began, suspected cases have risen dramatically to 906, with 223 possible deaths in the DRC as of May 29. Furthermore, Uganda has documented seven confirmed Ebola cases, three of which stemmed from the DRC, resulting in one death.

For context, the prior Ebola outbreak between 2014 and 2016 in West Africa saw over 28,600 infections and remains the largest outbreak since the virus’s discovery in 1976.

Treatment Plans for Americans Overseas

Following the announcement of a new 50-bed Ebola quarantine facility in Kenya on May 29, a court there quickly halted the plan due to public health concerns. U.S. officials indicated that this facility would accommodate Americans exposed to the virus who do not exhibit symptoms. If symptoms arise, those individuals would be treated in different countries outside the U.S.

Additionally, the CDC had momentarily restricted entry for some travelers who had recently been in the DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan.

Comparing the 2026 Outbreak to Past Incidents

Since the WHO designated the outbreak an emergency on May 17, cases have escalated in the DRC, where over 1,000 suspected cases are still being assessed.

How Contagious is the Ebola Virus?

Each infectious disease has a specific reproduction number (R₀), indicating how many individuals one person can infect without intervention. Ebola’s reproduction number is relatively low compared to diseases like COVID-19 or measles. However, it has a considerably higher fatality rate.

Symptoms of the Bundibugyo Strain

The symptoms generally mimic those of other Ebola strains. However, with limited cases reported for this specific strain prior to the outbreak, there’s still some uncertainty. Symptoms usually emerge suddenly, anywhere from two to 21 days post-infection.

How Ebola Spreads from Animals to Humans

Ebola typically enters the human population through direct contact with the blood, secretions, organs, or other fluids of infected animals. Infections have been traced back to handling fruit bats, monkeys, and other wildlife found dead or ill in the rainforest.

Increasing Animal-to-Human Disease Transmission

Recent outbreaks, such as Ebola and hantavirus, have stemmed from pathogens leaking from animals into humans. Peter Hotez, a pediatric and molecular virology specialist, argues that such zoonotic spillover events are becoming “our new normal.” He suggests we should expect significant zoonotic spillover events with increasing frequency.

A recent study underlines that greater human-animal interaction, particularly through trade, escalates the risk of disease jump.
