Is Gay Pride Month Finished? Should Black Pride be the Next Focus?

Pride Month Reflection

As Pride Month kicks off, Jason Whitlock, the emcee at Blaze TV, has observed that the usual celebrations seem a bit subdued this year. Shemeka Michelle and Bryson Gray also noted that America’s cultural landscape appears to be shifting.

Nonetheless, “pride” persists, albeit in a more understated manner.

Michelle pointed out, “I noticed ‘Pride Month’ was trending more than other topics, and many sports organizations were celebrating Pride Month. It feels frustrating that in an area where straight men should shine, there’s so much focus on gay representation.” She went on to mention that companies like Target and Walmart haven’t made prominent statements this time, which contrasts sharply with the huge displays they had in 2023.

Gray echoed the sentiment of progress. He commented, “From my career perspective, it’s now more acceptable to openly criticize and address LGBT issues. So yes, there’s progress, but we haven’t completely dismantled the barriers.”

While the fervor around Pride Month seems to be waning, Whitlock posed the question of whether it’s time to re-evaluate Black History Month and Black Pride.

Gray responded, “I believe that black history should be woven into the American narrative. While I don’t oppose Black History Month, it ought to be recognized as part of our broader history.” He further remarked, “I see racial idolatry as problematic, even though it comes from a place of pride.”

Michelle added, “Honestly, I hope we can move beyond concepts like black pride. I don’t want labels like ‘Black Girl Magic’ or ‘Black Excellence.’ It’s just love I’m after—true love, like what God meant by love.”
