Bessent Refutes Punch Threat Against Bill Pulte, Acknowledges He Did Threaten to Kick His Ass

Conflict Over National Intelligence Director Nomination

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has refuted claims that he threatened to “punch current Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte” during a heated exchange in the summer of 2025.

During a Senate Finance Committee hearing on Wednesday, Bessent acknowledged he did threaten to “kick his ass,” but denied any intentions of physical violence towards Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Pratt.

Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina questioned Bessent about his remarks, to which Bessent clarified his statement. Tillis responded, “Good. I share that sentiment,” expressing his lack of support for Pulte’s permanent appointment as DNI.

Senator Tillis criticized the advice given to the president regarding a public commitment to Pulte’s candidacy, suggesting that whoever did so should reconsider their position, as the odds against Pulte’s confirmation seemed unfavorable.

The tension began last summer at the inaugural dinner for the executive branch, where it was reported to Bessent that Pruitt had been critical of President Donald Trump.

Pulte was nominated by President Trump as acting director of national intelligence on June 2. The current DNI, Tulsi Gabbard, is set to resign on June 30 to assist her husband, who is undergoing treatment for a rare bone cancer.

Pulte will continue to serve in his roles as Commissioner of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and Chairman of Frannie Mae/Freddie Mac while taking on this new responsibility.
