Trump Open to DeSantis for Cabinet Role
Former President Donald Trump hasn’t dismissed the idea of appointing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to a Cabinet position.
In a recent episode, Trump was asked about the possibility of considering DeSantis for attorney general after Pam Bondi’s expected departure. He expressed a positive sentiment, saying, “Ron is very good.”
Trump noted that “people have thought of different names” for the position, but acknowledged that DeSantis hadn’t specifically mentioned interest in the role.
Despite their rivalry during the 2024 Republican primary — which included Trump labeling DeSantis as “Ron DeSanctimonious” — their relationship appears to have warmed since Trump’s victory.
Trump mentioned to the New York Post that DeSantis “was doing a very good job.” He further remarked, “Ron is a good guy. He’s my friend. He just named the airport after me,” referencing the renaming of Palm Beach International Airport to Donald J. Trump International Airport. “It’s a great honor,” Trump added.
Nonetheless, Trump indicated there’s no rush to appoint a permanent attorney general, preferring to focus on acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who took over after Bondi’s exit.
Trump shared his thoughts on Blanche’s performance, stating, “I wanted to know how he was being received…and he did a very good job.” He also mentioned, “There are a lot of wonderful people” being considered for the role, expressing confidence in the Republican Party’s talent pool.
In response to a question regarding his high praise for DeSantis, Trump noted that Blanche could soon be named permanent attorney general, suggesting, “I think that’s going to happen.”
These comments come as Florida is gearing up for an upcoming game on August 18. A primary election will take place in November to select a candidate to succeed the term-limited DeSantis.
