Maine Governor Janet Mills highlights her presence on the Senate ballot to voters.

Controversy Surrounds Graham Platner as Primary Approaches

The political scene in Maine is heating up, particularly for Democratic Socialist Graham Platner, who continues to face a barrage of controversies. Despite having suspended her campaign, former primary rival Janet Mills is reminding voters that her name will still appear on the ballot.

Platner, who remains the frontrunner heading into next Tuesday’s primary, hasn’t seen much competition from his only active opponent, David Costello. Mills, who suspended her own Senate campaign this year, recently made comments that stirred some speculation regarding certain Congressional members. A columnist suggested that Democrats might still support Mills to challenge New England’s last sitting Republican senator, Susan Collins, who’s been in office for three decades.

“People seem to think that I dropped out,” Mills reportedly said, emphasizing, “I just ceased active campaigning. I’m still voting.” Known for her vocal opposition to Trump, Mills faced backlash from the president earlier this year during a White House event focusing on biological males in women’s sports.

Democratic Primary Dynamics

Mills’ hiatus from campaigning has often been attributed to fundraising challenges, while Platner appears to be embroiled in multiple scandals. His tattoo—bearing resemblance to symbols used at Nazi concentration camps—has frequently made headlines. Additionally, his campaign faced criticism when a consultant approached sports media figure David Portnoy for assistance with an anti-private equity effort directed at the Boston Red Sox. Portnoy declined, citing his Jewish background and Platner’s controversial tattoo.

Moreover, Platner has come under fire after a resurfaced Reddit post in which he derogatorily referred to a former Pennsylvania lieutenant gubernatorial candidate, who suffered serious injuries in a Taliban attack, all while implying the Republican Party owes its survival to “bad marksmanship” from Afghan terrorists.

Mills’ Stance

Regarding her beliefs, Mills stated, “Everyone deserves the freedom to be who they are and to marry the person they love without fear. I am proud to stand with the LGBTQ+ community today and every day.”

In a column that reflected on Mills’ remarks, Steve Collins noted that a rising number of independent and Democratic women voters in Maine are expressing discontent over the controversies surrounding Platner, which he suggested could spell significant trouble for his campaign.

The primary in Maine is set for June 9th, and it promises to be an eventful one.
