Lawyer from Paramount: 'Antisemitic Beliefs' Driving Opposition to WBD Agreement

Concerns Over Paramount’s Merger with Warner Bros. Discovery

Makan Delrahim, the chief legal counsel for Paramount Skydance, has hinted that “anti-Semitic views” might be influencing the backlash against the studio’s merger with Warner Bros. Discovery.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Delrahim voiced his concerns about the motivations behind the opposition to the deal. He remarked, “Politics is part of life. It’s part of the beautiful process of democracy. In general, we’re very sympathetic to people in Hollywood, but this deal will actually create more, better, and exciting jobs.” He expressed his enthusiasm for filmmaking, noting that it would allow for ownership from the creative side for the first time.

Delrahim further stated, “Let’s be honest: There’s a lot of fear-mongering propaganda, especially from people in Washington, D.C., who are running political campaigns. Some of these individuals are trying to jeopardize this deal because of their anti-Semitic views. Regulators and law enforcement will see through that.” However, he did not specify who he believed held these views.

According to The Wrap, the merger is set to progress with the European Commission’s decision expected this July regarding the $110 billion deal between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. During the first stage of the investigation, the Commission will have 25 business days to approve the merger, seek relief, or launch a second stage investigation. Typically, regulators will request information from the merging companies or third parties, which may include surveys and other interactions with market participants to assess competitive conditions.

Recently, more than 200 journalists, academics, and filmmakers signed a letter opposing Paramount Skydance’s acquisition of CNN in light of its merger with Warner Bros. Discovery. The letter, presented by the Freedom of the Press Foundation, argued that Paramount’s control over CNN would represent “inappropriate political interference” from CEO David Ellison. Concerns were raised regarding reported changes at CBS, suggesting that news shows critical of certain policies had been removed and that various journalists faced dismissals rather than censorship.

The letter specifically highlighted the cancellation of critical shows and the inclusion of segments that flattered certain political figures, noting a shift away from journalistic integrity.
