Yankees edge out Guardians while Aaron Judge's situation remains uncertain

Yankees Secure Win Despite Judge’s Ongoing Absence

As Aaron Judge’s absence stretched into its third day—his towering 6-foot-7, 282-pound figure missing from the lineup—concerns shifted more towards his recovery than the game in progress. Still, the Yankees managed to salvage the series.

Ryan McMahon stepped up in a crucial moment, hitting a go-ahead single with two outs in the seventh inning, clinching a 2-1 victory over the Guardians on Thursday afternoon in the Bronx. His timely hit ensured that Carlos Rodon’s impressive outing did not go to waste.

While anxiously awaiting news on Judge’s condition, the Yankees (37-25) faced worries that were much bigger than the mere prospect of being swept by the Guardians (36-28).

Nevertheless, the Yankees were at least able to dictate their own fate on this particular day, pulling off the win despite Judge’s lingering injury.

The game saw Jazz Chisholm Jr. tie things up with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, but in the seventh, a walk to reliever Cody Hoyer ignited the Yankees’ winning rally. After stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, he scored on McMahon’s single to right field.

Brent Headrick, Fernando Cruz, and David Bednar played vital roles from the bullpen, each delivering scoreless innings as the Yankees sealed their victory.

On the mound, Rodon continued to impress, allowing just one run and striking out seven in six innings. His performance marked his fifth and most convincing start since returning from the disabled list.

Interestingly, Rodon did not concede a hit until the fourth inning, when the Guardians struck first. Jose Ramirez led off with a single, then stole second and advanced to third on a fly ball to center. A well-placed single from Stuart Fairchild allowed the Guardians to take a 1-0 lead.

In quick response, the Yankees attempted to equalize but squandered their chance to take the lead. Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger ignited the rally with consecutive singles, later advancing to second and third on a double steal. Ultimately, Chisholm’s sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1, but Bellinger was thrown out trying to advance to third, having overslid the bag.

Max Schumann, filling in for Judge in right field, contributed defensively with two notable plays. He made a leaping catch in the seventh inning to leave a runner stranded, providing a boost to the pitching staff.
