Tulsi Gabbard Shares Update on Husband’s Health After Surgery

In a recent heartfelt post on X, Tulsi Gabbard, the outgoing Director of National Intelligence, shared that her husband, Abraham Williams, is recovering at home following a nearly seven-hour operation for a rare condition known as sacral chordoma.

Gabbard wrote, “My husband, Abraham, has been diagnosed with a very rare form of sacral chordoma. The operation to remove the affected bone and surrounding tissue was successful.” She added that he experienced a rough night post-surgery and is currently in considerable pain but is finally at home resting. Recovery is now underway.

Last month, Gabbard had announced her resignation from the DNI role to focus on her husband’s battle against what she described as “extremely rare bone cancer.” In mid-May, she informed President Trump of her decision during a meeting in the Oval Office, and her last official date with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence was anticipated to be June 30.

In closing her post, she expressed her gratitude for the support they had received, saying, “Our hearts are full.” This marks her first disclosure of his specific diagnosis.

President Trump announced on Tuesday that Bill Pruitt, Secretary of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, has been appointed as acting DNI. Trump noted that Pruitt would also continue to serve in his current role during this period.

Ms. Gabbard is a veteran and currently serves in the U.S. Army Reserve. She previously held multiple terms as a Democrat before transitioning to an independent stance and later aligning with the Republican Party.

Gabbard’s formal resignation letter acknowledged the trust placed in her during her time leading the DNI and mentioned, “Unfortunately, I must submit my resignation effective June 30, 2026, due to my husband’s recent diagnosis.” She expressed her commitment to fully support him through the challenges ahead.

Reflecting on their 11 years of marriage, Gabbard noted that Abraham has been her support throughout various significant events, including her deployment in East Africa and numerous political campaigns. “I can’t ask him to fight this battle alone while I carry on in such a demanding position,” she wrote.

Responding to her resignation, President Trump expressed his faith in Abraham’s recovery, stating he wanted to prioritize their family’s needs during this challenging time. He emphasized how much Gabbard’s contributions would be missed, noting she did an exceptional job.

Sacral chordoma is described as a slow-growing bone tumor affecting the sacrum, which is located at the base of the spine, and is classified as a rare form of bone cancer by the National Cancer Institute.
