Trouble at Alamo City?
In a recent turn of events, rookie Dylan Harper of the San Antonio Spurs shared a video critical of his teammate De’Aaron Fox, particularly targeting his performance in Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the Knicks.
Reports indicate that De’Aaron was seen commending James Harden after a game in which Harden’s stats were notably lackluster.
This video, which several accounts on X have shared, draws from Harden’s game against the Pistons on May 7, where he scored only 10 points, shooting just 23 percent from the field and missing all four of his three-point attempts in a loss to the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers, despite their struggles, aimed to recover from a 0-2 deficit in the Eastern Conference semifinals, only to be swept by the Knicks.
Interestingly, Fox’s stats in Game 1 mirrored Harden’s disappointing performance.
Harper, who has a TikTok following of over 593,000, has since deleted the video. Both Fox and Harper have played fairly similar roles for the Spurs thus far, with Fox seeing slightly more court time.
In that opening game of the Finals, Harper showcased his skills, contributing 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 1 steal.
Despite Harper’s strong rookie season — he ranked ninth among newcomers in points per game — it was curious to see him utilized for only 3 minutes and 33 seconds in the decisive fourth quarter. Coach Mitch Johnson opted instead for Fox, who played almost 11 minutes without scoring.
“Dylan, the game wasn’t over because of what he did or didn’t do. That was a decision I made,” Johnson remarked on Thursday. “I realize having Dylan in the mix made sense. I believed that group performed well during that time, so I stuck with them.”
The Spurs had a solid lead of 13 points at one stage in the third quarter, yet they faltered, managing only 40 points in the last two quarters. The Knicks finished strong, embarking on an 11-0 run in the closing minutes to secure a 105-95 victory.
