The son of James Handy’s girlfriend has been charged with murder following the discovery of Handy’s body, which was found stabbed outside his home in Tarzana. If found guilty, Michael Gledhill, aged 44, faces a potential sentence of up to 26 years to life in prison, as mentioned in a press statement from the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hockman expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “No one should have to end their life this way, stabbed in the chest and left to die in their front yard. The victim, James Handy, deserved to spend his final years enjoying what he worked so hard for and enjoying the company of his loved ones and those who matter to him.”
Hockman further noted, “Like all murder victims, his life mattered. The person who inexplicably and violently took his life must be held accountable for his actions.”
James Handy, an actor recognized for his roles in films like “Jumanji” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” was allegedly killed by Gledhill. Handy was reportedly attacked early Wednesday morning. A 911 caller identified himself as “a man’s son” and claimed he had just killed someone who had committed a crime.
When law enforcement arrived, they found Handy, who was 81, unconscious in the front yard suffering from a stab wound to the chest. He was transported to a local hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Gledhill reportedly informed officers of his involvement and identified himself as the suspect. He resides at the same home as his mother, Handy’s girlfriend.
Currently detained in Van Nuys Jail, Gledhill’s bail has been set at $2 million.
