New York Democrats Introduce Bill Eliminating “Mother” and “Father” from State Law

Recently, Democrats in New York passed a bill aimed at removing the terms “mother” and “father” from certain parts of state legislation. This bill is now set to be reviewed by Governor Kathy Hochul.

The focus of the bill lies within the state’s child custody laws. Here, the term “mother” is proposed to be redefined as “pregnant parent,” and “father” as “non-pregnant parent.” Furthermore, the phrase “father and child” would be replaced with “parent-child relationship.”

Initially passed in the House back in March, the state Senate approved the bill this week.

Lawmakers supporting the bill argue that these language changes encourage “inclusivity.” On the other hand, some critics believe these alterations are unnecessary, especially with Congress set to adjourn soon.

At a recent press conference, Hochul mentioned she was not well-informed about the proposal but assured she would look into it. “We will not comment on pending bills until the end of the year because we need to examine them and make decisions,” she stated.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman voiced his opposition through social media. He expressed his discontent, stating, “In Kathy Hochul’s ‘New York,’ ‘mom’ is now defined as ‘expectant parent.’ Not when I’m governor! I’m going to stand up for moms and dads against this insanity.”

Blakeman further remarked, “This bill is a continuation of the war against Hochul’s family, and I will not stop fighting until we take back New York.”

In response to the legislation, Representative Claudia Tenney pointed out the irony, claiming, “A party that cannot define woman is now trying to rewrite New York state law to remove mother and father. Only in Albany can ‘mother’ and ‘father’ be overly controversial.”
