Richard Gere’s Warning to Democrats

Richard Gere is sounding the alarm for Democrats about the consequences of neglecting their responsibilities.

During his speech at the Oslo Freedom Forum in Norway on Tuesday, the 76-year-old actor expressed his thoughts on the current state of the United States. He remarked that under President Trump, “we are living through the darkest moment we have ever experienced on this planet.”

“How did we get here? Because we were complacent. We didn’t care. We didn’t vote. We didn’t really listen,” he stated.

“I certainly didn’t support this man, but I also didn’t make enough of an effort to persuade those around me that it was unreasonable to elect him as president,” he admitted.

He described President Trump as a “madman” who has “undone nearly everything good about American governance and society.”

While he recognized that the U.S. has “never been perfect,” he noted that it has always managed to “self-correct.”

Later in his speech, Gere recounted a recent visit to the Dachau concentration camp, using that experience as a stark warning about how rapidly our freedoms can vanish if we remain unaware, urging everyone to “pay attention to the signs.”

“We can’t just relax and think, ‘Oh, everything’s fine. I have what I need… I’m okay.’ That’s not enough. It’s never enough,” he emphasized. “We must be alert to the signals, the rise of tyranny, how fast it can occur.”

Previously, in December 2025, Gere discussed his reflections on America after an encounter with the Dalai Lama, a close friend. He shared that he feels the nation has strayed significantly, adding that he’s at a loss to explain “what President Trump has done to this country” or what it’s like to be an American right now, which he described as “remarkable.”

“If we want a better world, we need to elect leaders who share our vision and elevate who we are as individuals and as a society, rather than perpetuating this chaotic battlefield we see every day,” Gere stated.

He mentioned the inadequacy of the current leadership, describing it as reflecting very crude thinking.

In terms of personal developments, Gere and his wife Alejandra Silva moved to Spain in late 2024. He regarded the transition as a “great adventure,” having never lived outside the U.S.

He explained that their move was beneficial for his wife, as it allowed her to reconnect with her family and culture, offering a worthwhile trade for the six years she had spent with him in America.

In an interview with the Daily Mail in April 2025, Silva clarified that their relocation wasn’t permanent, sharing, “We’ll be in Spain for a few years and then come back. We always return.” She expressed her happiness about being with family but acknowledged a longing for America, saying, “So we go back and forth.”
