Political Campaign Incident in Brooklyn

A politician, seemingly caught in a heated moment, has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a 98-year-old man during an argument over campaign flyers. This incident took place while Tashara Abel, a 27-year-old involved with Democratic Socialists of America candidates, was distributing re-election materials in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn.

According to police reports, Abel was stuffing flyers into a mailbox at around 4 p.m. when the elderly man entered the building. What started as a discussion about payments for candidate Anthony Beckford, who is running for re-election as Democratic district leader, escalated into violence.

Witnesses state that Abel struck the man multiple times, using both a broomstick and a metal chair in the altercation.

The victim suffered a minor head injury but declined medical assistance at the scene.

Following the incident, Abel faced charges including three counts of assault, robbery, and weapon possession. She was scheduled for arraignment soon after her arrest, and notably, she has no prior arrest history, according to police sources.

Beckford’s campaign is currently reviewing the situation. He stated, “I am looking into this matter to understand it fully and have reached out to the concerned individual to ensure he is receiving the necessary support.” He emphasized that volunteers linked to his campaign are expected to uphold a standard of respect and professionalism.

Furthermore, he reiterated the campaign’s commitment to maintaining a safe environment for all community members and expressed readiness to cooperate with authorities as needed.
