Jamia Nelson Takes on Major Role with 76ers Following Front Office Changes
Jamia Nelson, a former NBA guard, has stepped into a significant position within the Philadelphia 76ers organization after a notable shake-up in the front office.
With Daryl Morey resigning as team president, the 76ers also parted ways with Elton Brand, who had served as general manager since September 2018.
Nicholson, a Philadelphia native and former NBA All-Star, will take over Brand’s responsibilities. He has been with the organization since 2020 and held the role of assistant general manager since May 2025.
He will report to Mike Gansey, the newly appointed president of basketball operations.
This transformation in Philadelphia follows yet another disappointing playoff run, where the team’s aspirations for success were cut short once more in the second round.
The 76ers did enjoy a seven-game winning streak against the Celtics, including three consecutive victories to wrap up the first round, followed by a win over the Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Nelson has progressively advanced within the organization since retiring from professional play.
After his playing days, he took on roles in player development, scouting, and executive positions, leading up to his recent promotion to general manager.
This new appointment indicates a potential shift for a team seeking to rebuild after yet another second-round exit.
It’s been 25 years since the 76ers last reached the Eastern Conference Finals. After becoming a familiar presence in the playoffs, they’ve been eliminated in the second round six times over the past nine years.
As the offseason approaches, the 76ers are faced with uncertainty about their core roster.
Joel Embiid, who is 32, has a contract worth a combined $120 million for the next two seasons, along with a $67 million player option for the 2028-29 season.
Paul George, now 36, is in the third year of a four-year deal, set to earn $54 million next season, with a player option of $56.6 million for 2027-28.
Tyrese Maxey, at 25, also has three years left on a contract that will see him earning over $40 million next season.
With the 22nd pick in the draft, the 76ers will be evaluating their decisions regarding free agents Quentin Grimes, Andre Drummond, and Kelly Oubre.
This appointment has positioned Nelson as a key figure in determining the future trajectory of the franchise.
Before his successful NBA career, Nelson made a name for himself at St. Joseph’s University, where he became one of the standout players in the program’s history.
Drafted 20th overall in 2004, he spent 10 seasons with the Magic, including a notable run that led the team to the NBA Finals in 2008-09, where they ultimately fell to the Lakers—Kobe Bryant’s first championship after Shaquille O’Neal had left the team.
As an All-Star this past season, Nelson averaged 16.7 points and 5.4 assists per game, with impressive shooting percentages: 50% from the field, 45% from beyond the arc, and 89% at the free-throw line.
He concluded his playing career after the 2018 season, having also played for the Nuggets, Pelicans, Celtics, Pistons, and Mavericks.
