Tatiana Maslany Calls for Boycott of The New York Times

Actress Tatiana Maslany, known for her role in Marvel’s She-Hulk, recently urged her followers to boycott The New York Times, claiming the publication is detrimental to various marginalized groups, including transgender individuals, Palestinians, and the black working class.

Last week, she shared a video on Instagram, featuring Palestinian activist Mohamed Elkurd and transgender advocate Sabrina Imbrar. They encouraged audiences to stop purchasing The New York Times during an event titled “The People vs. the New York Times,” which took place in New York this past April.

This event was rooted in the belief that the newspaper is acting as a covert supporter of right-wing, MAGA-influenced narratives, misrepresenting issues faced by transgender people, the black community, and Palestinians. There are claims from some that there is a genocide occurring against Palestinians, yet there are actually more Palestinians in Gaza today than ever before.

This isn’t the first time Maslany has called for a boycott based on her beliefs. Back in September, she encouraged fans to refrain from using Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN after ABC suspended late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, whom she viewed as being unfairly treated despite his declining ratings—all from a network that, quite frankly, has made her famous.

This year, she also requested that fans boycott the upcoming film Scream 7, following the firing of actress Melissa Barrera over her social media comments regarding Israel.

Maslany frequently expresses her views in interviews and on social media, often advocating for liberal policies. For instance, in July 2024, she called for legislation to limit parental authority in making decisions for their children. Furthermore, she has criticized the entertainment industry for using phrases like “strong female leads,” arguing that such labels are too simplistic.

Recently, she attended a red carpet event for her new Apple TV series Best Pleasure where she spoke passionately about the ongoing situation in Gaza. Sporting a pro-Palestine button, she stated, “I’m wearing this because there’s no ceasefire in Gaza. There’s no ceasefire in Palestine.”

She emphasized, “Israel continues to bomb, and the US, Canada, and the UK are all complicit. We must keep discussing this.” Maslany feels strongly that the conversation around Gaza has been sidelined, insisting that people should remain aware of the ongoing crisis.

“It’s easy for me,” she remarked, indicating that she feels a responsibility to speak out on the matter.
