DC Comics Releases Pride Month Issue Featuring Trans 'Wonder Woman'

DC Comics is set to unveil a transgender version of Wonder Woman in honor of Pride Month.

The forthcoming comic, titled Justice League Dream Girls – DC Pride Event, introduces the character Nia Nal, also known as Dreamer. In this narrative, Nia embarks on an alternate journey where she becomes Wonder Woman instead of Diana Prince.

“DC Pride has always aimed to shine a light on queer characters and is a platform for fresh storytelling throughout the year,” noted DC Editor Andrea Shea. According to reports, he added:

“In many ways, 2026 marks the culmination of the last five years. This aligns with our vision: a collection of stories rooted in DC continuity that represent the next chapter for many cherished characters,” Shea elaborated.

Dreamer first appeared on television in 2018, portrayed by transgender actor Nicole Maines in the CW series Supergirl, which ran from 2015 to 2021. The character transitioned to comics in 2021 as part of the DC “Pride” event.

Dreamer possesses unique abilities, including precognition through dreams and the capability of astral projection or projecting energy bursts.

Alongside comic writer Jadzia Axelrod, Maines collaborated on the Wonder Woman Switch issue.

This particular edition is scheduled for release on June 3rd.

Over the last decade, DC has reimagined some of its iconic figures as queer characters.

In 2023, they portrayed Green Lantern, Alan Scott, as gay, though this comic faced significant challenges and underperformed in sales.

Additionally, the attempt to depict Superman’s son, Jon Kent, as a bisexual character was also met with a lack of success, leading to its cancellation after 18 issues.

DC continues to embrace LGBTQ+ narratives within its extensive roster, which includes characters like Midnighter and Apollo, Batwoman, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Tim Drake’s iteration of Robin.
