Congressman Massie Calls for Another Inquiry into Israel Regarding the USS Liberty Incident from 59 Years Ago

Commemoration of the U.S.S. Liberty Attack Anniversary

On the House floor this Monday, a speech marked the 59th anniversary of the U.S.S. Liberty. Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie called for a fresh investigation into the notorious attack and also sought to honor the ship’s crew.

Massie’s remarks referred back to June 8, 1967. The U.S.S. Liberty, a Navy vessel engaged in intelligence operations near the Sinai Peninsula, was bombarded by two Israeli fighter jets and struck by three torpedoes. The Israeli government described it as a mistake, which was later echoed by a U.S. Naval Court of Inquiry.

However, Massie and other survivors have consistently disputed this narrative. They argue that the Court of Inquiry’s findings are fundamentally flawed and insist that the attack was intentional. Some sailors even went so far as to state that there was a deliberate plan to eliminate everyone aboard.

Massie shared insights from conversations he’d had with survivors just before his speech, noting how their memories conflicted significantly with official accounts. Survivors indicated that American flags were clearly visible on the ship, countering Israeli claims of ignorance about the U.S. vessel’s identity.

About 20 minutes after the initial jet attacks, a torpedo was launched, causing substantial damage to communication equipment. Eyewitnesses reported that the Israeli forces even fired upon lifeboats that were deployed for rescue, as well as the crew attempting to fight the flames aboard.

Despite the urgency of the situation, the U.S. 6th Fleet sent planes to provide support, but, according to reports, the crew of the Liberty was unable to receive help for 18 hours after the assault because the planes were called back.

Massie cited several notable figures, including former Secretary of State Dean Rusk and CIA Director Richard Helms, who expressed disbelief that the incident was an accident. They share a view that it was a calculated attack, perhaps to prevent witnesses from seeing what was happening that day.

In closing, Massie urged for action. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the crew and their experiences, suggesting that individuals visit USSLiberty.org and support efforts for closure. He insisted that now, while survivors are still here, there should be an investigation and a formal resolution to honor their service, as it is long overdue.
