Until July 4th, the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream is showcasing U.S. citizens sharing what the American Dream means to them. One notable figure is Earvin “Magic” Johnson, a former NBA star and now successful businessman who has been a prominent advocate in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
For Johnson, the American Dream embodies ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to thrive.
He emphasizes his awareness of the challenges faced by marginalized groups in urban areas, which resonate with his own upbringing. Growing up in poverty, he worked diligently to harness his basketball talent, opening doors that might not have otherwise been available.
Reflecting on his journey, he acknowledges the values instilled in him by his parents. His father worked multiple jobs to support their large family, while his mother inspired him with her desire to make a difference in the world.
Beyond basketball, Johnson valued education and networking. He proactively sought mentorship from successful individuals, which he sees as crucial for achieving the American Dream. He believes that it’s about hard work, educational attainment, and lifting others as you rise.
Each year, giving back remains a priority for him. He has provided scholarships to 125 children and established 18 technology centers around the U.S. His philanthropic efforts extend globally, with contributions to building homes and hospitals in Africa and significant donations to HIV and AIDS organizations within the U.S., totaling over $10 million.
To Johnson, the essence of the American Dream is about aiding others, not just oneself.
