NASA’s Artemis III Mission Crew Announced
NASA has revealed the crew members set to journey to the moon in 2028, including two astronauts linked to California. This announcement marks a significant advancement in the agency’s long-term lunar program.
On Tuesday, NASA introduced the four selected astronauts for the Artemis III mission, which is a crucial phase in returning humans to lunar orbit.
Among the crew are Randolph Bresnik, a military veteran often referred to as “Comrade,” and his fellow NASA astronaut Frank Rubio, both of whom have connections to California. They will be joined by Andre Douglas and Luca Parmitano from the European Space Agency.
The mission will take place aboard NASA’s Orion spacecraft, with the crew expected to spend about three weeks orbiting Earth.
During this period, they will perform a series of rendezvous and docking exercises with commercial lunar landers, which will help test essential systems for upcoming lunar landing missions.
Nasa officials highlighted that this mission is one of the most technically demanding in the Artemis program, requiring astronauts to repeatedly maneuver and dock the spacecraft in orbit. The ultimate goal is to facilitate another lunar landing within the next decade.
This announcement is especially significant for California, reflecting the state’s ongoing contributions to the U.S. space program.
Bresnik, despite being born in Fort Knox, Kentucky, has ties to California. He considers Santa Monica his home, where he graduated from Santa Monica High School. He later earned a mathematics degree from The Citadel and a master’s in aviation systems.
Notably, Bresnik has spent around 3,600 hours in space and logged over 7,000 flight hours across 95 different aircraft types.
Rubio’s background is also linked to California; although he considers Miami home, he was born in Los Angeles. He graduated from Miami Sunset High School, went on to earn a degree in international relations from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and got a medical degree before joining NASA.
The crew includes Douglas, a former Coast Guard officer and engineer who was selected for NASA’s 2021 astronaut class. Before his astronaut career, he contributed to projects involving marine robotics and space exploration.
Parmitano adds an international perspective to the mission. The Italian astronaut, from Catania, has completed an extended mission on the International Space Station and serves as a representative of the European Space Agency.
Nasa officials emphasize that this upcoming mission will validate essential techniques and procedures in preparation for future lunar missions, potentially paving the way for deeper space explorations down the line.
