Charles Barkley challenges ESPN to let him go after making a provocative Cardi B joke during the NBA Finals

Charles Barkley Jokes About Being Fired Over Cardi B Remarks

Charles Barkley recently expressed a rather humorous desire for ESPN to let him go, triggered by some jokes he made about Cardi B’s performance.

“I hope they fire me,” he quipped during an appearance on FOX Sports Radio. “I still have six or seven years left on my contract, which means they probably want to fire me and just pay me for that time.” His comments came after he reacted to Cardi B’s halftime show during Game 3 of the NBA Finals held at Madison Square Garden.

Barkley amusingly remarked, “I don’t know if that’s B. It could be Cardi D,” referencing her performance. “I’m sure those aren’t Bs. Her initials are wrong.” He followed this up with another thought, saying, “I’d love to be fired, but honestly, the chances of me working for the next six or seven years are zero.”

He further commented, “Come on, can’t we all take a joke? They can kiss my… well, you get the idea. I appreciate the support, but if anyone thinks everyone loves them, they’re mistaken. If people don’t like me or can’t appreciate my humor, they can kiss my whole… you know.”

Even though Barkley seems to jest about getting fired, he actually continues to find joy in his role on “Inside the NBA,” ABC’s main studio show for the NBA Finals. It’s interesting because, while he jokes about his employment, he hasn’t completely ruled out the idea of working for another six or seven years, indicating a sense of freedom in his current role.

What’s more, he now finds himself involved with ESPN platforms without being directly employed by them. Shows like “Inside the NBA” and “The Pat McAfee Show” are productions of TNT, which ESPN licenses without having any editorial control over them. It’s a unique situation, really.

So, even if ESPN had the option to fire Barkley, it seems unlikely they would do so. It’s not just about him being a key figure in their coverage—he’s quite the crowd-pleaser, and his humor brings something unique to sports commentary.

On another note, Barkley’s participation in the NBA Finals broadcasts marks a major milestone for ESPN. They’ve struggled for years to establish a compelling pregame and halftime show that could rival TNT’s offerings. Various notable personalities have come and gone, yet nothing quite resonated until now.

After TNT decided not to renew its NBA broadcast rights after the 2025 season, ESPN seized the opportunity to shift its approach. As it stands, “Inside the NBA” significantly enhances ESPN’s coverage, with Barkley still standing out as the show’s star.

Jokes about Cardi B’s physical appearance, though perhaps controversial, seem to fit right into the more unrestrained atmosphere that Barkley embodies. It’s a complicated relationship with humor, but one he embraces wholeheartedly.
