Unforgettable Game 4: Knicks Stun Spurs
At Madison Square Garden, tensions were high as the NBA Finals unfolded in Game 4 between the Knicks and the Spurs. A shocking series of events led to an intense discussion on ESPN’s “Inside the NBA,” where Charles Barkley’s frustration was palpable.
“We just witnessed the dumbest basketball team in history,” Barkley stated after the Spurs shockingly blew a 29-point lead, allowing the Knicks to secure a narrow 107-106 victory. He emphasized how mismanaged the game was, saying, “If you have a points lead like that, the other team needs to help you lose.”
After a strong first half, where the Spurs looked unassailable, they crumbled, producing only 30 points in the second half. Their shooting was particularly abysmal, failing again and again beyond the three-point line.
Barkley didn’t hold back: “The San Antonio Spurs did some of the silliest things I’ve ever witnessed on a basketball court, enabling the Knicks to take this win.” He expressed particular annoyance about Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox’s layup attempt being blocked by Knicks’ OG Anunoby, saying, “There was no need for him to take that shot.”
Fox had the opportunity to extend his team’s lead after recovering a missed shot but perhaps should have waited for a foul instead of going for the layup. Anunoby made a pivotal block, giving the Knicks another shot at victory.
“They were up by 29 points, sailed through eight consecutive threes—still, they acted as if the game was far from over,” Barkley remarked, clearly baffled by the Spurs’ sudden drop in performance.
“Tonight, the Knicks received an unexpected gift,” Barkley added later, capturing the game’s surreal twist.
Shaquille O’Neal chimed in, agreeing with Barkley, noting that the Spurs seemed to relax and lose their edge in the second half. Looking ahead, the Knicks are set to fight for the Finals title in Game 5 on Saturday in San Antonio.
