Meta Launches Training Program for Trade Jobs

Meta Inc., led by Mark Zuckerberg, is rolling out a free training initiative aimed at preparing Americans for skilled trade positions essential for its growing network of data centers. The company assures that those who finish the program will secure a job in the field.

According to a report, Meta has introduced the American Workforce Academy to cultivate skilled professionals necessary for constructing large-scale data center facilities across the U.S. The initiative, developed in collaboration with commercial real estate firm CBRE and a related builder and contractor trade association, will not charge participants anything. Upon completion, they’re guaranteed employment at a Meta Data Center construction project. This year, Meta is investing $115 million into the program and plans to pilot it in states like Louisiana, Ohio, Indiana, and Texas. Details on how to apply are available online.

In a statement, Dina Powell McCormick, Vice Chair of Meta, expressed, “The AI revolution brings not only change but also historic opportunity. Skilled workers electrified rural America one pole at a time. They staffed the factories that built the arsenals that won World War II. Now, a new generation will lay the foundations and the fibers that will secure America’s power in this new era.”

The initiative comes at a crucial time; skilled trade workers are in short supply in the U.S. labor market. The construction industry is particularly feeling the crunch, with estimates suggesting a need for around 349,000 new workers this year alone to keep up with demand.

The surge in data center construction significantly contributes to this demand. Facilities designed to support artificial intelligence workloads require extensive electrical setups and advanced heating and cooling systems, thus creating heightened demand for electricians and HVAC technicians. A recent analysis revealed that jobs related to data center construction have nearly doubled over the last two years.

Meta has previously shown a keen interest in training programs geared towards trades. Earlier this year, they launched a fiber installation training initiative intended to prepare workers for fiber technician roles, which attracted around 35,000 applications within the first week.

Commenting on Meta’s efforts, Mike Rowe, CEO of the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, noted, “Closing America’s skills gap requires not only making a stronger case for skilled workers in general but also rethinking how we train the next generation of skilled workers. America’s Workforce Academy is doing both. Workers are paying to actually learn without incurring debt; they earn qualifications quickly and are guaranteed jobs. This is a crucial step forward, and we hope other companies will take note.”
