Jeff Metcalfe, the grieving father of Austin Metcalfe, expressed unexpected understanding for Carmelo Anthony after he received a lengthy prison sentence for fatally stabbing his son.

Sitting in a Texas courtroom, Jeff revealed that he felt a twinge of sympathy for the 19-year-old responsible for his son’s death—he even mentioned wanting to forgive him for the sake of his own peace of mind.

“I guess I’m human, so, sure, I felt some sadness,” he shared with CBS News. “That poor boy is going to face a life I wouldn’t wish on anyone.”

He then elaborated, “Forgiveness isn’t really for him; it’s more for me. I don’t want to carry around anger or hatred—it can consume you like cancer.”

Carmelo Anthony was convicted of first-degree murder for the April 2025 incident in which he stabbed 17-year-old Austin during a dispute at a track meet in Frisco. Anthony received a 35-year prison term but will be eligible for parole in 17 years. Jeff, however, believes he should have been sentenced to life in prison.

He asserted that if he survives, he will challenge any possibility of parole. “If I’m still around, I would definitely be there,” he stated. “If not, I’ll have something recorded to play.”

In addressing the discussions circulating around potential racial motivations in the case, Jeff firmly rejected those claims. Supporters of Anthony have suggested that racial bias influenced the prosecutor’s decision-making, and legal analysts expect this angle to serve as a focal point in Anthony’s appeal.
