Mississippi Teen Charged with Murder, Brothers Attempt to Shoot Deputy

A Mississippi teenager, Cordarius Hobbs, 17, has been charged with the murder of an elderly couple, Billy and Virginia Carol Blair, who were killed in their Mendenhall home on June 3. Days later, on June 8, Cordarius’s brothers, Cortavius and Cortavion Hobbs, allegedly tried to kill a deputy during a traffic stop.

According to Covington County Chief Deputy Sheriff Ricky Lott, the brothers were pulled over for a seatbelt violation, initially appearing “honest, friendly, and cheerful.” They had just come back from a fishing trip, but the atmosphere changed when the deputy noticed marijuana in their vehicle. Tensions escalated when the deputy questioned them about the drugs.

During the traffic stop, both Cortavius and Cortavion reportedly fled, leading to a high-speed chase that ended when they got stuck in the mud. It’s been reported that Deputy Rodney Yates was shot in the shoulder during this encounter. The injuries were serious enough that doctors warned he may “never walk again,” and he faces a challenging road ahead as he recovers.

Cordarius Hobbs faces multiple serious charges including two counts of capital murder for the deaths of the Blairs, as well as robbery and several counts of aggravated assault. His brothers are charged with attempted capital murder and hindering prosecution, with Cortavion facing an additional charge of felony escape.

Authorities have noted that both Cortavius and Cortavion have juvenile criminal histories, though specific details haven’t been disclosed. The recent events have shocked the community, especially given the brutal nature of the crimes involved and the tragic impact on law enforcement.

This situation raises many questions about violence and the consequences it brings, not only to victims and their families but also to the communities involved.
