The first trillionaire: SpaceX's IPO brings wealth beyond just Elon Musk

SpaceX’s Record-Setting IPO

Elon Musk and SpaceX achieved a remarkable milestone on Friday, creating a wave of positive stories surrounding the event. Established in 2002, SpaceX garnered significant attention with its IPO debut on NASDAQ, transforming the lives of countless employees in the process.

The company successfully raised $75 billion through its initial public offering, making Musk the world’s first billionaire. It’s interesting to note that, in addition to Musk, over 4,000 individuals—including cafeteria staff—are set to benefit financially thanks to shares they’ve held for a long time.

Musk even took to social media to express that the IPO could lead to approximately 4,400 new millionaires, stating, “God bless capitalism,” amidst a multitude of reactions from people regardless of their role, from engineers to cafeteria workers.

SpaceX has already begun distributing wealth, notably offering a greater portion of shares than is customary in most IPOs—more than 20% reserved for retail investors.

The company’s unprecedented $75 billion round is over twice the size of its largest prior market debut, which raised $29.4 billion with Saudi Aramco in 2019. This new valuation raises SpaceX’s worth to approximately $1.77 trillion, marking it as the largest IPO launch ever.

Before this event, Musk’s net worth was estimated at $782 billion, keeping him firmly at the top of the wealth rankings. He has nearly three times the wealth of Google co-founder Larry Page.

During a press conference with JPMorgan Chase, Musk mentioned that SpaceX has been operating with positive cash flow since around 2015. The company reported impressive revenues of $18.67 billion in 2025, although it did face a net loss of $4.94 billion.

As SpaceX looks to further capitalize on its momentum, plans include launching over 100,000 satellites into orbit and establishing an AI data center in space.
