Windham Clark Riles Canadian Fans with Jersey Tribute
Not so long ago, Olympic ace Jack Hughes clinched a memorable victory for Canada, and now golf sensation Windham Clark seems intent on keeping that moment fresh in everyone’s minds.
While participating in the RBC Canadian Open, Clark stirred things up by sporting a Hughes jersey as he made his way to the 14th tee. It wasn’t surprising that the crowd, in true sporting spirit, responded with boos aimed at the Denver native.
Clark, at 32, spun around amidst the jeers, pointing to his jersey, clearly enjoying the reaction. Just prior to making his tee shot, he took off the jersey, but the crowd’s disapproval came rushing back once he hit the ball.
Typically, golf fans cheer after a swing, but Clark made sure to evoke some painful memories for the Canadian audience. When his shot landed just a few feet from the hole on the 134-yard par-3, a brief hush fell over the crowd. However, this didn’t last long; as he donned the Hughes jersey again on his way to the green, the boos came cascading down once more.
Clark didn’t let the jeers deter him. He sunk a birdie putt, bringing his score to 9 under par, all while the crowd continued its protests. In a playful gesture, he tipped his cap towards the outrageously vocal fans.
Showing no signs of slowing down, the reigning U.S. Open champion quickly added more birdies on the 14th, 15th, and 18th holes, finishing the day at 11 under. As things stand, he is currently in second place.
Looking ahead, it seems Clark is embracing the role of the antagonist, with hopes of claiming the championship title on Sunday. A win would certainly build on his recent success, including a victory at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson just last month.
